Tea Parties: A Brief History
The first recorded tea party took place in England in 1662, and was hosted by Queen Catherine of Braganza, the wife of King Charles II, who was King of England, Ireland, and Scotland in the 17th century. Throughout Charles and Catherine’s reign, tea parties were elaborate markers of extravagant wealth and sophistication, hence the title of High Tea. At the turn of the 18th century, the beverage became more accessible, giving way to more casual afternoon tea gatherings hosted by those in the lower class. Over time, tea has remained a significant cultural symbol of the United Kingdom, though the popularity of the pastime has spread all over the world. Tea ceremonies are commonly practiced in China, Japan, and Morocco. Tea time is also traditionally enjoyed across countries in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In the United States, however, our concept of the tea party leans British. An American preference for coffee seems to have stemmed, in fact, from the Revolutionary War (Boston Tea Party, anyone?). In lieu of taxation and revolutionary efforts in the colonies, coffee was deemed the more patriotic drink of choice by our forefathers. Today, with easy access to all sorts of teas, and the less pressing politics of warm beverages, it really comes down to the preference of your pallet.
