Tie Your Colors Together
Curtains, rugs, sofas and chairs all come in different sizes, shapes and colors but they can be your greatest competition for making that family room, living room or dining room look chic and put together versus tacky.
If you are getting ready to redo your family room, living room or dining room it is important to have the fabrics in your special room tied together with the perfect balance of sophistication. Interior designers have that special skill of looking at the room and pulling colors and fabrics together to make it have that chic look. Below are some tips to help you get a jump start to brainstorming your room:
Tip 1
If at all possible, clear out the room. Start with the basics. Strip the curtains off the windows. Dust and vacuum the room. If you have hard word floors, take the rugs up. Seriously, take everything out of the room.
Tip 2
Select 3 main colors that you want to work with. The color of the wall, the colors in the floor (whether that is carpet an area rug or the hardwood floors), and the colors for the fabric in the chairs or couches.
Tip 3
Now, this is where it gets tricky. You want to pull these colors together, but also make them pop. If you are dealing with an oriental rug and a beige wall, pick a semi-dominant color in the rug perhaps it is a deep brown or deep indigo blue and use that for your chair seat fabric, if you have a dining room set with wooden chairs. If you have a family room that has carpet, leather couches and a neutral wall, then you will really have to decorate your room with bold curtains that perhaps tie into artwork on the walls or lamp shades on the end tables.
Tip 4
Remember, less in this case is best. Try to stick to 3 main shades and include the areas that cover a lot of ground, the walls, the floor and then that third color has to bring the ceiling and the ground together to tie it all up nicely.
Finally, look through magazines, talk with friends and have an interior designer come out and take a look at the space that you are working on. The possibilities for your room are endless!
