Through rich or poor: Franklin couple learned the values of a strong marriage from the start

When it comes to engagement rings, the ad says “a diamond is forever.”

Peter and Pam Alderman will tell you a toy ring bought from a cheesy vending machine in a quaint Italian restaurant can do the trick as well.

The Aldermans, who are originally from Massachusetts and have lived in Franklin since moving here in 2007 to be close to their sons and their families, have been married for 47 years. Theirs is a marriage that exudes “forever,” and its longevity has nothing to do with how many diamonds adorned the ring when Peter popped the question.

As couples everywhere celebrate Valentine’s Day this weekend – whatever that might or might not involve – Peter and Pam Alderman recently sat in their Fieldstone Farms kitchen and reminisced about their teenaged courtship, proudly discussed their three sons and five grandsons, and generally shared their thoughts on what makes a marriage last.
