Invention Convention

Invention Convention

The sixth graders of Poplar Grove School have been busy at working creating inventions with an energy theme. Inventor Jeff Sheets came to speak to the students to share ideas in the process of creating an invention and inspiring them to use creativity. The students were required to show the transfer of energy in their invention.

Some research was completed on an inventor whom they may have spring-boarded from, or an inventor of an invention that may have been improved upon.  Students were encouraged to use their knowledge of inventors or inventions previously studied in social studies. In language arts classes, the students created commercials with their inventions using propaganda techniques. In reading classes, students are reading novels or stories about inventors or inventions, including studying the Greeks and Greek mythology with the many Greek inventions.

An exciting part of this project was the opportunity for the students to enter a contest with the U.S. Department of Education demonstrating ideas of energy conservation in making our world a better place to live.   The grand prize for this contest is a trip to Hawaii or $1000 for the state winner.

Student inventions are currently on display in the Poplar Grove middle school media center, which will open for viewing on Wednesday, February 6, from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
