Ed Moody, Franklin legend, dies at 92

Ed Moody, the owner of Moody Tires, World War II veteran and philanthropist, died Wednesday.
Deeply involved in the Franklin community, Mr. Moody was a member of the Rotary Club and the American Legion, and was known to attend meetings as he traveled around the world. He was instrumental in establishing the Franklin chapter of the Boys and Girls Club, served on the board of the YMCA, and was chairman of the Franklin Rodeo from 1954 until the 1970s. Mr. Moody worked closely with the Williamson County Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Franklin Special School District board. He also served on the boards of the Harpeth National Bank, First Tennessee Bank, and Baptist and Williamson County hospitals. The Civitan Club named Mr. Moody its citizen of the year. He was also active in First Baptist Church.
“Ed was a dear friend of mine,” said Roy Barker, former proprietor of Barker Insurance. “If you put up a contest for Best Citizen in the Country, he would win.”
In a phone conversation this morning, Barker recalled his early days of business when Moody’s Tire was located on Main Street across from the Franklin Theatre. “It was back in the days when people repaired tires.”
Barker, joined Franklin Noon Rotary “about two to three years” after Mr. Moody.
“He was an all around good man – a good Christian,” Barker said. “He did a lot for Williamson County. We have lost one of our better citizens.”
