History of The Park at Harlinsdale Farm

Harlinsdale Farm, established in 1933 by W.W. Harlin, is vital to Franklin’s history. Known for its role in breeding world-class Tennessee Walking Horses, Harlinsdale was home to Midnight Sun, a repeat World Grand Champion who became a legend in the walking horse community. For decades, Harlinsdale operated as a leading training facility, drawing equestrian enthusiasts from across the country.

In 2004, the City of Franklin acquired the 200-acre property, transforming it into a public park to preserve its legacy for future generations. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Harlinsdale continues to captivate visitors with its historic barns, white fences, and rolling pastures. Though the horses are no longer the centerpiece, the farm remains a beloved site for community events, equestrian activities, and a connection to Franklin’s past.

Franklin, Tennessee’s Historic Legacy

Founded in 1799 and named after Benjamin Franklin, the city of Franklin has a rich history rooted in agriculture and trade. One of the town’s most defining moments came during the Civil War with the Battle of Franklin in 1864. Historic sites like Carnton and Carter House serve as lasting reminders of this turbulent period, having functioned as makeshift hospitals for soldiers during the battle.

In the years following the war, Franklin rebuilt itself as a center for agriculture while maintaining its small-town character. Today, the town has grown into a vibrant community that successfully blends its historic charm with modern development. Downtown Franklin, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a model for preservation, showcasing restored buildings that echo its origins. As Franklin continues to grow, the town remains dedicated to honoring its past, making it a uniquely charming destination with a deep sense of history.
