Williamson County Animal Center Waives Adoption Fees on August 30 and 31
Funds for sponsored fees raised by volunteers to help offset over crowdedness.
In early July, volunteers at Williamson County Animal Center (WCAC) rallied to raise money that they used to sponsor adoption fees during a special event dubbed “Clear the Halls with Love from the Vols”. Their efforts led to nearly 30 sponsored adoptions at a time WCAC was overcrowded with dogs due to a significant decrease in adoptions compared to 2023. As that trend continues, the volunteers are stepping in once again.
On Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31, approved adopters will have their adoption fees covered by funds remaining from the volunteers initial efforts. Discounts apply to puppies, adult dogs and adult cats only, KITTENS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. Volunteers will then use any funds leftover following the two-day special event to sponsor selected dogs still at the animal center, with a focus on those who have been at the shelter long term. Therefore, folks who are not quite ready or not able to adopt on those particular days may later be able to welcome a pooch into their family at no cost for adopting.
Director, Ondrea Johnson said that WCAC has actually taken in 19 fewer cats and dogs through July of 2024; however, there have been 259 fewer adoptions than in 2023, a decrease of 19%. The impact being felt more with dogs than cats.
Long-time dog-walker Jennifer Biggs initiated the volunteer’s efforts. “As a volunteer, we get to know and love on these dogs like they are our own,” Biggs explained. “And, as much as we enjoy spending time with them, we want them to find their forever home as quickly as possible. It’s heartbreaking to see such wonderful animals who have so much to give stay here too long.”
All cats and dogs adopted from WCAC are spayed or neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations. Fees are typically $50 to adopt a kitten, adult cat or adult dog and $85 for a puppy (less than one year old).
If your adopted pet is too young to have received its first rabies vaccination, you can have that done at WCAC for no additional charge at the appropriate time.
WCAC is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.; Saturday 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.; and closed Sundays. Hours may vary due to holidays and WCAC will be closed to the public on Monday, September 2 in observance of Labor Day. The center is located at 1006 Grigsby Hayes Court in Franklin.
