Remembering the Raid with Words & Music in Partnership with the Stones River National Battlefield
MURFREESBORO, TN —On July 13, 1862, The Civil War came to Murfreesboro with the sound of clattering hooves and gunfire as Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and his cavalry brigade charged into town and surprised the Union garrison. Join the rangers and volunteers from the Stones River National Battlefield and staff of Oaklands Mansion on the grounds of Oaklands for a series of programs highlighting the events of that day 157 years ago on the site where the 9th Michigan Infantry withstood several Confederate onslaughts until they were compelled to surrender.
Program Schedule:
10 AM – 4 PM – Take a self-guided tour of Oaklands and imagine how the Maney family endured military occupation and a battle raging outside their front door. You’ll also see the rooms where the commanders of the 9th Michigan Infantry made the difficult decision to surrender. The cost is only $5 per person.
11 AM – “Turn Out! Turn Out! The Rebels Are Coming!” – Watch a musket firing demonstration as a park ranger tells the tale of the Murfreesboro Raid as described by Sergeant Charles Bennett of the 9th Michigan Infantry.
