Live Green in Franklin
Franklin Tomorrow will present the first of four planned lectures in the new “Live Green in Franklin” lecture series on Monday, March 30, at 6 p.m. at Franklin City Hall.
Kicking off the lecture series will be Charlie Geiger, speaking on “Learning to Live Green in Franklin.”
For 20 years, Geiger has been a proponent of environmentally friendly and locally made products throughout the United States. Her background in environmental science lead her on a journey that included hosting a radio talk show called “The USA Green Lady,” writing for numerous media outlets, being an environmental consultant, co-founding a sustainable business association called Middle Tennessee Green and more recently being involved with the Franklin Sustainability Committee on their project to become one of the nation’s most sustainable cities.
She also recently opened the “Healthy Green & Smart” store at The Loft at Henpeck Market and online at www.HealthyGreenAndSmart.com.
Although “green” has always been Geiger’s primary focus, when she became a mother of four (with two children having special needs and chemical sensitivities) she had to research and delve more deeply into products for her family that were not only green but healthy and did not pose a health risk.
“Too many of the products that were on the market for infants and children were made of questionable materials and coated with numerous unnecessary chemicals,” said Geiger. “I had to make a stand and demand better products for not only my children, but for all children and families.”
Franklin Tomorrow is participating in the city’s sustainability effort, working to develop a public education program with other community volunteers and create a Web site where information about the effort can be shared.
“Franklin Tomorrow has a history of providing information through public lectures with its ‘New Growth, Deep Roots’ lecture series, which will continue alongside this series of events,” said Natalie Dodd, executive director of Franklin Tomorrow.
The TMA Group is a sponsor the “Live Green in Franklin” lecture series.
Reservations are not needed for the lectures, which will be taped for rebroadcast at a later date on the city’s Cable Channel 10.
The “New Growth, Deep Roots” lecture series will resume on April 30 with another installment of “Franklin 101.” The topic will be “Water: Where it Comes From and Where it Goes.”
Franklin Tomorrow is a non-profit community organization that communicates a shared and evolving vision for the future of Franklin and focuses that vision through education, advocacy, evaluation, implementation, and recognition of the vision’s specific goals and strategies.
