Happy Tales Humane, a no-kill animal shelter housed in Franklin, TN and serving all of Middle Tennessee is thrilled to announce the opening of their very own spay/neuter surgery suite, housed inside their space at The Factory in Franklin. The Love Fixes Everything Surgery Suite is yet another step HTH is taking towards reducing the number of homeless pets in Middle Tennessee and has been a dream of Executive Director, Kat Hitchcock’s since she took the helm at the shelter in 2006.

“With a financial gift from Happy reTales, Pet Supply Store & More, we were able to realize a dream of ours that dates back to our founding in 1996. Over the course of the next few months we will begin to see a dramatic savings to our overall veterinary expenditures. Of course, that makes us exceedingly happy, but those savings aren’t even the most important thing. We will be able to make a more profound dent in the number of homeless pets being born in the first place, which in the long run helps to save lives. We are very grateful for the partnership with Happy reTales. We couldn’t have made this huge leap forward without their support,” says Hitchcock.

Pet overpopulation is prevalent all over the world. A female cat can begin breeding as young as 4 months of age. Left unaltered, she and her offspring can produce as many as 420,000 cats in just 7 years. An unaltered dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years.

The suite is just one aspect of HTH’s Love Fixes Everything program, a low-cost spay/neuter initiative that teaches the public the importance of spaying and neutering and allows the purchase of spay/neuter vouchers at a discounted price. “We know cost is a big reason why some do not spay/neuter. We don’t want that to be an excuse anymore,” says Hitchcock.
The Love Fixes Everything Surgery Suite officially opened on June 23rd and within two weeks, 35 surgeries had already been performed by shelter veterinarian, Dr. Elizabeth Fellows. By performing spay/neuter surgeries in-house, Happy Tales Humane will save as much as 75% on vet expenses related to those surgeries.

“There are no words to express how much the opening of this suite means to me,” states Hitchcock. “It would still be a dream if it weren’t for the gracious financial gift from Happy reTales and the expertise and drive of Debbi Cure, our shelter manager.”
Cure, who came to Happy Tales Humane one and a half years ago from the Houston SPCA, agrees that the opening of the surgery suite will further the effectiveness of Happy Tales’ mission on many levels.

“By having our own in-house spay/neuter suite, we will have the ability to take in those animals we previously would have had to turn away. With the help of our shelter veterinarian, we’re able to provide behavioral and medical evaluations at the time of the intake and immediately schedule surgery so that these animals can be placed up for adoption that very same week,” states Cure. The Love Fixes Everything Surgery Suite is currently only open to pets sheltered at Happy Tales Humane.
