August Kids Club – “Clay Creations”
Children from ages 5 to 10 years old can take part in the Frist Center’s Kids Club. Each month on Saturdays from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., kids can create unique artworks. In August, Kids Club participants will use self-drying clay to create their own species of bird, complete with nest and eggs. Kids Club offers exciting opportunities for children to discover, explore, and create art. Free membership includes a Kids Club card, art classes, and additional rewards for participation.  Kids Club is free; call 615-744-3357 to reserve a space.

Frist Fridays Concert Series Features Lee Roy Parnell August 31

Country music star Lee Roy Parnell will take the stage during our popular Frist Fridays series on August 31, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Each event, the final Friday of each month through October, features live music, light appetizers, cash bar, giveaways and much more.  NOTE: High-resolution images are available.

Call for Works for Statewide Juried Exhibition for Adult Artists with Disabilities
The Frist Center announces a statewide Call for Works for an exhibition highlighting adult artists with disabilities. Entries are open to emerging and professional artists ages 18 years and older living in the state of Tennessee who have a physical, cognitive or mental disability (a disability is defined as an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity). All proposals must be submitted by Oct. 1, 2007. For further information about the Frist Center’s Call for Works, please contact Susie Elder at (615) 744-3351 or by email at selder@fristcenter.org. The exhibition will open at the Frist Center in May 2008.

•    Life’s Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists’ Brush with Leisure , 1895-1925
(Upper Level Galleries)
The so-called Ashcan school, an early 20th century group of painters working in New York, is best known for their gritty depictions of working class life in the city. Illustrating another important aspect of their oeuvre, the 70 paintings in Life’s Pleasures show the diversity of leisure activities engaged in by all classes, as experienced and observed by such Ashcan painters as John Sloan, Everett Shinn, George Luks, George Bellows, William Glackens, and their leader, Robert Henri. This exhibition was organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Thursday, August 9    Off the Wall Lecture Series, Part 2: “What Every Chinese Person Knows: Cultural Literacy in Lyrical Traditions”

Cultural literacy is the ability to understand effortlessly the allusions, idioms, and images that constitute a culture and that might be overlooked or totally misunderstood by one from another culture. In this presentation, Ms. Li Qingjun of Middle Tennessee State University and associate professor of foreign languages at Zhengzhou University (China), will highlight a number of paintings from the Papp Collection that represent readily identifiable aspects of Chinese cultural literacy, setting them in context and illuminating them for non-Chinese viewers. The presentation will include paintings with festival subjects as well as those with references to folk and narrative traditions that have created the Chinese consciousness and sensibility for generations. Moderated by Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Director of Asian Studies at Belmont University. This Off the Wall Lecture series is presented in collaboration with Belmont University’s Asian Studies Program.

Learn the art of calligraphy—a delight to the eye and inspiration for the spirit—in this workshop for teens. Teens will learn about the relationship between traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy by using traditional Chinese inks and brushes. Chinese painting and calligraphy instructor Dr. Guanping Zheng, an associate professor at Middle Tennessee State University, will teach the workshop. Dr. Zheng’s Chinese brush painting employs traditional and modern techniques. His works have been exhibited and collected in the U.S. and China.

Watch a 20-minute demonstration with a tai chi master Dr. Lijun Ma, a faculty member of the Vanderbilt Pathology Department, and then take a 40-minute lesson. Dr. Lijun Ma started his tai chi chuan training at the age of seven with Master Xi-Fang Chen. He has won numerous championships in China and the United States. He taught tai chi chuan at the Nashville Chinese School and teaches individual classes. Presented in conjunction with the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts and WAMB-AM present Senior Mondays, a series of events for those who admit their “senior” status.  On these days, gallery admission is $4.25 (1/2 price) for seniors and a special senior parking fee of $2.00 in the Frist Center lots is offered, based on availability. Seniors receive a 15 percent discount on Gift Shop purchases and on Frist Center Café refreshments purchased during the event. Seniors can enjoy WAMB’s Harry Stephenson live radio broadcast in the Grand Lobby. And, at

Join Dr. Corinne Dale, Professor of Literature at Belmont University in the areas of Chinese aesthetics and literature, for a presentation on the traditional Chinese landscape as a harmonious balance of dynamic energies. Using works from the exhibition, she will focus on dragon-shaped clouds, mountains, rivers, forests, and paths to demonstrate how Chinese dragons are powerful forces of nature that express the Daoist worldview. This series is in collaboration with the Belmont University Asian Studies Program.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts and WAMB-AM present Senior Mondays, a series of events for those who admit their “senior” status.  On these days, gallery admission is $4.25 (1/2 price) for seniors and a special senior parking fee of $2.00 in the Frist Center lots is offered, based on availability. Seniors receive a 15 percent discount on Gift Shop purchases and on Frist Center Café refreshments purchased during the event. Seniors can enjoy WAMB’s Harry Stephenson live radio broadcast in the Grand Lobby. And, at
1:30 p.m., seniors can enjoy a special in-depth tour of selected exhibitions.

Lyrical Traditions: Four Centuries of Chinese Painting from the Papp Collection

Drawn from the collection of Phoenix (AZ) residents Marilyn and Roy Papp, Lyrical Traditions comprises 60 evocative handscrolls, hanging scrolls, fans and albums produced during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. On view through Oct. 7, 2007, Lyrical Traditions and the concurrent exhibition, Whispering Wind: Recent Chinese Photography, will be the first exhibitions of Chinese art shown at the Frist Center. Whispering Wind: Recent Chinese Photography

Featuring works by 20 contemporary artists from China, some of whom live in the West, the exhibition was organized by Mark Scala, chief curator at the Frist Center. Whispering Wind includes landscapes, urban scenes, and narrative works by photographers who have achieved international renown for their aesthetic experimentation and expressions of deep humanism. Sylvia Hyman: Fictional Clay

Jim McGuire: The Nashville Portraits

This exhibition pays homage to Nashville’s country music heritage through 60 black and white photographs of beloved artists such as Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, and Bill Monroe. VISITOR INFORMATION
The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, located at 919 Broadway in downtown Nashville, Tenn., is an art exhibition center dedicated to presenting the finest visual art from local, regional, U.S. and international sources in a program of changing exhibitions. The Frist Center’s Martin ArtQuest Gallery features over 30 interactive stations relating to Frist Center exhibitions. Gallery admission to the Frist Center is free for visitors 18 and under and to Frist Center members. Frist Center admission is $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and military, and $6.50 for college students with ID. Discounts are offered for groups of 10 or more with advance reservation by calling (615) 744-3246. The Frist Center is open seven days a week: Mondays through Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the Café opening at noon.
