The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of arts and crafts activities for teens and adults at the Franklin Recreation Complex, located at 1120 Hillsboro Road. WCPRD is a public organization, here to benefit the community. No membership is required. Anyone can register for and participate in classes. RENAISSANCE PAINTING WITH MELANIE JACKSON
Learn the Renaissance painting technique of layering, which produces a more professional piece and develops individual painting style more quickly. Instructor Melanie Jackson welcomes all skill levels. Students will choose their own subjects to paint using oil, acrylics, pastels or colored pencils. Choose from two classes: Monday nights, January 4-22 (skip 1/18 and 2/15); or Thursday nights, January 7-February 11 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost for a six-week course is $85. WATERCOLOR WITH SHELLEY SNOW
National Award Winning Watercolorist
Shelley Snow works individually with each student at any skill level. Beginner to advanced painters welcome! Fundamental through advanced techniques in watercolor painting will be covered—with an emphasis on color, composition and values. Students may work with the subject matter of their choice; including still life, landscapes and portraits. Teens and adults can participate on Wednesdays, January 6-27 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The class fee is $120 for four weeks. DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN
Instructor Melanie Jackson offers a class for people who have always wanted to draw but never thought they could, have never drawn before, or just want to improve their skills. Using drawing exercises, learn to see the way an artist sees. Jackson studied at Watkins Art Institute and her work is represented in private collections and at the Tennessee State Museum. KNITTING
Learn to knit in this 3-part course. In the first class, learn the basics, learn how to read a pattern and begin a simple project. During the second class, work on your project and improve your skills. In the final class, learn finishing techniques. Suggested projects include an afghan or baby item. THE MAGIC OF FLOWERS-Orchid
If you love flowers, join this painting class and learn a great way to keep them forever! Practice the art of observing the minute detail of live flowers, unique details and the art of transferring the detail to paper using drawing and watercolor techniques. January’s focus will be the orchid. Course will cover the history of botanical art and 19th century prints. No experience necessary. A two-week course will be offered on Tuesdays, January 12-19, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a total cost of $25. A one-time class will be offered on Saturday, January 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $25. An optional palette fee of $5 is payable to the instructor. Supply list provided at sign-up. SCRAPBOOKING FOR YOUR HIGH SCHOOLER
If your child is a senior this year, you can learn how to create a lasting souvenir of the class of 2010 in this scrapbooking class. Get started by creating six 12×12 scrapbook pages about your child’s high school experience. Bring photos to class along with a paper trimmer (if you have one) and adhesive (red 3L tale runner). Class meets Thursday, January 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or Friday, January 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Class fee: $8 plus a $10 supply fee payable to the instructor. STAINED GLASS FOR BEGINNERS
Move beyond just admiring stained glass and learn to make your own in this six-week course. Learn the basics of copper foiled stained glass construction (made famous by Louis C. Tiffany). Choose from a variety of patterns and learn about sources for purchasing glass. All other supplies are provided by the instructor. Sample projects can be viewed at www.sapphireroad.com. Stained Glass will meet on Thursdays, January 14-February 18 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The course is $90. For adults. Limited to six participants. Scrapbooking IN A FLASH
Try this fun new scrapbooking method for newbies and experienced alike! Cut and glue first, then add photos. It’s different, but you will learn to scrap FAST without sacrificing quality. Get your family memories into books now. Students will go home with six completed layouts. Bring 12” paper trimmer (if you have one) and adhesive (red 3L tape runner) from craft store. Two class times will be offered: Choose Friday, January 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. or Thursday, January 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road.
