Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream
Curt Jones, a local inventor and founder of Dippin’ Dots ice cream, will visit students on Tuesday, December 9, at 11:00 AM at Johnson Elementary School. The children, students in Sharon Hargrave’s multi-age (grades 1-2) class, will interview Mr. Jones on camera as he explains how he invented Dippin’ Dots. He will also share some aspects of how businesses operate.
Mrs. Hargrave is incorporating Mr. Jones’ visit into her economics unit of teaching. As part of the unit, the students will invent their own holiday product, create a prototype, and a draw up a flow chart. They will develop a budget, create their product by a pre-determined deadline, market their merchandise, and then take orders from adults in the school.
As a digital educator (one who attended an FSSD summer institute focused on the integration of technology into the curriculum), Mrs. Hargrave will have her students digitally photograph and videotape each other during the development, marketing and sales of their products (which involve only “play money”).
Johnson Elementary serves approximately 350 students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade. It is located at 850 Glass Lane and is one of seven Franklin Special School District Schools.
