Protect Yourself from “Porch Pirates” as Christmas Approaches and Last-Minute Gifts Arrive

As Christmas draws closer and last-minute online orders arrive on doorsteps across the region, consumers are being urged to take extra precautions to avoid falling victim to “porch pirates”, thieves who steal unattended packages.

Package theft typically spikes during the holiday season, when delivery volumes are high, and packages are often left outside for extended periods. These crimes can turn the excitement of holiday shopping into frustration and financial loss, particularly for families relying on last-minute deliveries.

“As shoppers rush to complete their holiday gift lists, it’s important to stay vigilant,” said Robyn Householder, President and CEO. “A few proactive steps can help ensure gifts make it safely from the delivery truck to under the tree.”

To help consumers protect their purchases, Better Business Bureau offers the following tips:

Consumers who experience package theft should report the incident to the retailer, shipping carrier, and local law enforcement. Keeping records and documentation can help with replacements or refunds.

Always report suspected fraud to the BBB by filing a complaint, visiting BBB.org/Scamtracker, and contacting the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov or call 877-FTC-Help.
