Red Cross to host blood drive in honor of Oak Valley Baptist Church member

The American Red Cross and Oak Valley Baptist Church in Franklin are hosting a blood drive in honor of church member Beth Helm on Monday, Nov. 9 at the church.

Helm has been a dedicated Red Cross blood donor after she experienced a health scare as a teenager and required several pints of blood.

Helm says when she was an active, healthy 13-year-old she began hemorrhaging while at school. Over several days, she was in and out of consciousness and was eventually rushed to the hospital, where she received blood transfusions.

She says she credits the Red Cross and the people who had donated their blood with saving her life. It’s something that has motivated her to give back and become a regular blood donor herself, recently reaching the milestone of donating one gallon of blood. She says she plans to continue donating and encourages others to give, too.

“Through the years, I have thanked God for giving me this life and I have remembered to donate blood so that I can be a blessing to others in need,” Helm said.

The blood drive will be held from 2-7 p.m. at the church located at 1161 Lewisburg Pike. To make an appointment to donate, call 1 800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767), visit redcrossblood.org or download the Red Cross Blood Donor app. Walk-ins are welcome.
