Local Mayors Hog the Spotlight Friday at the Fair

Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson, Franklin Mayor Tom Miller and other local municipal chiefs will vie for premier porcine prestige as contestants in the annual Mayor’s Pig Race at the Williamson County Fair presented by Tractor Supply Company.

Friday, Aug. 10, at 4:30 p.m., the mayors will gather at the Fair’s Hogway Speedway at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park for the thrilling competition, presented by Tennessee Commerce Bank.

"This not-to-be-missed event is fraught with suspense, insatiable appetites, intrigue, mystery, royalty and glamour," said Art Helf, chairman and CEO of Tennessee Commerce Bank, which sponsors the Hogway. "You really have to see
it to believe it."

To dispel any confusion, the mayors themselves will NOT run around the Hogway. Instead, each will be provided one of the Fair’s famous racing pigs as a stand-in. The result, says Anderson, is not unlike a political race.

"It’s done in the heat, and we’re relying on others to carry the flag and make it through to the end," Anderson observed. "It will be a worthwhile activity for all mayors to come and unseat last year’s winner."

Anderson noted that he was in the lead in last year’s mayoral oink-a-rama until his pig stopped to eat. While not accusing anyone by name, he maintained that another candidate had been eating a Twinkie that mysteriously found its way into his pig’s path.

"They gave me the hungriest pig," he insisted. "I was set up."

This year, says the county mayor, he plans to bring home the bacon.

"I will be thrilled to win, even if it’s by a snout."

Pig lovers, political enthusiasts and sports fans of all stripes are invited to Friday’s racing extravaganza. Admission is included in Fair admission ($6 adults 12 and up; $3 children 5-11; under 5 free).
