How to decorate a bedroom

For some decorating a home is an exciting hobby. They have “an eye” and find new pieces to add to their décor on a regular basis. When the pieces are brought home, they find the perfect place to seamlessly blend their new addition into the room. Their space always looks fresh but comfortable, ordinary yet distinctive. For others, decorating is an overwhelming task, and they end up with something clustered and confusing. An empty space seems daunting and barren. They can’t envision colors or furniture, much less accessories. There are some simple solutions for the decorating-challenged and easy ways to do it yourself.

Here are some tips for decorating a bedroom from scratch, no matter what your decorating skill level is. Easy alterations can be made to this design plan are included if you already have furniture, bedding or a set wall color. To learn how choose colors in other rooms…

Primary Colors
These are the colors of your walls, flooring, furniture and bedding. First take inventory of any color you cannot select or change. This is often the carpet color, rental house walls or bedding. If any of these colors are not a neutral shade (ie: not whites, tans or grays), then that will likely have to be your “base color”. If you aren’t obliged to any base color, then you are free to choose your own.

First, identify or choose your base color. Use the base color on your walls if you prefer a softer look, use lighter shades of pinks, yellow, lavender, blues or greens. If your prefer a rich look and want to focus on deep colors such as reds, oranges, plums, black, navy or brown, choose bedding with these colors and the bedding will be your base color. Neutral carpet or hardwood floors likely do not influence the color scheme and probably will not be your base color. If you are getting a rug, either compliment the walls with a slightly darker shade, solid rug or compliment solid bedding with a patterned rug that ties with an accent color. Flooring will have to be your base color or politely ignored if you are stuck with (or chose) something like orange shag carpet.

Furniture is also typically fairly neutral—made from woods and either stained or painted a light color. Even mismatched furniture can usually be “thrown together” for a cohesive look. A bright pink armoire works with a brass headboard and white bedside tables. Don’t be scared to mismatch furniture pieces. Some of the most unique pieces can be found at flea market, Craigslist or passed down from a friend or family member. Paint old pieces to create a new look or change outdated hardware to fit your style.

Bedding can go two different directions, it can heir on the basic and incorporate accent colors or as mentioned earlier, it can be your base color.

Bold colors that are rich and are deep shades make beautiful bedding. These colors also dictate the rest of the room and become your base color. Bedding is patterned and rich, the bed instantly become the focal point of the room and the walls and floors are lighter and neutral shades. Dark, light, matching or mismatched furniture compliment bold bedding. Find out where to get fabulous bedding and other home decor in Franklin, TN.
