Gentry celebrates 90th birthday in community he loves

On Saturday, friends, family and former students surprised local storyteller and World War II hero, Jimmy Gentry, who was born Nov. 29, 1925, with an old-fashioned surprise birthday party and hootenanny at Green’s Grocery in Leiper’s Fork.

Performing at the event, included singer/songwriter and former football player and Gentry’s student at Brentwood Academy, Gordon Kennedy and the ever popular Austin Brothers.

With good barbeque and all the fixin’s made by the daughter of Jimmy’s good friend, Rod Shean along with two birthday cakes, plenty of sweet tea and country music, the party was as Franklin as the man it honored. Earlier this month, a portion of Highway 96 was named after Gentry because of his long-time service to the community and his bravery in the U.S military.
