Created in 2015 after an epiphany Justin Varnes had while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University, the JLP has an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note jazz club in Atlanta, where they have been selling out their performances for 6 years and counting. Ditching a traditional textbook in favor of playing records and telling stories about the artists to college kids who knew little or nothing about jazz proved to be a big success. It turned out that performing the artist’s music and telling their stories in between proved to be an even bigger success.

The Jazz Legacy Project presents the Life and Music of John Coltrane – the Beauty of Struggle. Coltrane’s transformation from his traumatic childhood, late blooming as a musician, and alcohol addiction into the creator of some of the most beautiful, powerful, and indelible music is one of the most inspirational stories in American culture. Featuring passionate jazz performances combined with socially-conscious and relevant narration that helps the listener understand how Coltrane’s music works, his impact on modern music, and his impact on America and its culture. Tailored to casual audiences looking to better appreciate America’s art form born of the African-American Experience. The show features a multimedia experience of live music, narration, images, and video footage.

Bringing casual jazz listeners inside the minds and music of the most influential and interesting American musicians of all time, drummer Justin Varnes leads ensembles of various sizes in engaging performances that highlight masters in the jazz tradition.

OPENER: the Teafolk Trio.
Featuring:  Alice Gould – Fiddler, vocalist & songwriter from Savannah, Alice began her big stage performances at 5, participating in her first Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival. She was chosen as an Acoustic Kids Ambassador and has performed at Merlefest or Walnut Valley each year since. Alice has competed in fiddle contests from CO to NC winning multiple awards. Alice was chosen as the Junior Jazz Rising Star and will be the first 2024 Strings intern at Hilton Head Jazz Camp. She regularly performs in the Low Country as a soloist, in a rock duo, Jazz and classical violinist, and in many bluegrass groups. Alice would be at home sharing the stage with bands like Nickel Creek, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan, April Verch, & Hank, Pattie & the Current.
