The African American Heritage Society’s 17th Annual Black Tie Affair

The African American Heritage Society’s 17th Annual Black Tie Affair will be held on Sat. Feb. 3, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in Cool Springs.  AAHS is pleased to announce Williamson Medical Center as honorary chair of the event. They are also presenting sponsors of the event this year! AAHS appreciates the contributions WMC has made and are happy to bestow this honor to them as honorary chair for that night!

AAHS is also pleased and grateful to have the legendary retired lead singer of the famous group the Barkays of Memphis, an R & B group, appearing, who recorded many popular hit albums and singles from the 60’s to the 80’ and who has dozens of charting singles from that time. Larry is now an author and entrepreneur, who will have copies of his new book, “And the Band Plays On”.  Well-known founder, board emeritus and local historian, Thelma Battle, who has written several books, may have her new book titled “Natchez  Street Revisited Volume II”,  available in Feb.

The Black Tie Affair is a fundraiser that supports the McLemore House Museum; home of former slave Harvey McLemore, who built the home as a free man and which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The event also supports the African American Heritage Society, whose mission is to chronicle the lives and contributions African Americans have made in our community. This year’s theme is Preserving the Past, Securing the Future.”  Ife and Demani Keene of Panama, descendants of legendary Williamson Countians, Mariah and Bolin Reddick, will be in attendance accepting a preservation Award for their upcoming book, “Cladenstine, The Times and Secret Life of Mariah Reddick” a historical novel they were inspired to write about their ancestors after visiting Franklin and the graves of their ancestors.

Social hour for the “Black Tie Affair” begins at 6:00 p.m. with a cash bar; the program begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Immediately following the program, there will be music and dancing by Julius Fisher and the Genius Band until 11:00 p.m.
