BBB of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky Warns Residents to Beware of “Storm Chasers” Following This Weekend’s Snowstorm

As Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky residents begin assessing damage from this weekend’s snowstorm, Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging homeowners to remain alert for so-called “storm chasers”—out-of-town contractors who may take advantage of consumers during times of uncertainty.

Storm chasers often appear shortly after severe weather events, offering quick repairs for damaged roofs, fences, fallen trees, or other storm-related issues. While not all are scammers, many may lack proper local licensing, insurance, or the ability to complete promised work.

“As residents deal with storm damage and winter weather cleanup, we want to make sure they have the information they need before hiring a contractor,” said Robyn Householder, President and CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. “Our strongest recommendation is to start at BBB.org to find a trusted business that has already been vetted.”

BBB recommends homeowners take the following steps before hiring a contractor after a winter storm:

Contact your insurance company first.
Before making repairs, review your policy coverage and understand filing requirements. Your insurance provider may also offer a list of approved or recommended contractors.

Resist high-pressure sales tactics.
Be cautious of contractors who insist you must act immediately to secure a “special deal.” Reputable businesses will allow time for you to research, compare estimates, and make an informed decision.

Be cautious of door-to-door solicitations.
Many municipalities require permits for door-to-door sales. Ask for identification and verify the contractor’s business name, phone number, and licensing. Pay attention to vehicles—legitimate contractors should have marked company vehicles and local license plates.

Never sign over insurance checks.
Do not sign documents giving contractors control over your insurance claim. Request a written invoice and pay contractors directly, preferably by credit card, which offers additional consumer protections.

“We want residents across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky to know they are not alone during storm recovery,” Householder added. “BBB is here to help connect consumers with trustworthy businesses and provide guidance during this stressful time.”
