The Darrell Waltrip Automotive Group’s Drive Away Hunger Challenge hit a huge milestone with their most recent challenge surpassing two million pounds of food collected.

Started in 2012 by the Darrell Waltrip Automotive Group as a way to help fill local food pantries by partnering Williamson County High Schools with GraceWorks. Since then the challenge has grown to include Franklin Special School District & Williamson County Elementary and Middle Schools.  Schools choose from a list of locals pantries to collect for including GraceWorks, The Well, One Generation Away, College Grove Food Pantry and The Nolensville Food Pantry.

“The Drive Away Hunger Challenge is one of the best things we have ever done for the community,” said Darrell Waltrip, President, Darrell Waltrip Automotive Group.  “Partnering local schools with their favorite pantry is a win for everyone.  It’s been incredible to watch the schools work together to give back and together they have collected over two million pounds of food.”

Over 44,000 students from 60 schools have the opportunity to collect donations for those who are food insecure in our community each year with the High School Challenge in September, the Elementary Challenge in November and the Middle School Challenge in March.

Each year schools compete for cash prizes, the official Drive Away Hunger Challenge trophy and bragging rights in their district.  Hunters Bend and Nolensville Elementary Schools recently celebrated winning this year’s Elementary School Drive Away Hunger Challenge.

“True community investment is a rare thing, but Darrell Waltrip’s Hunger Challenge is that rare thing” said Alicia Bell, CEO of GraceWorks.  “GraceWorks applauds their loyal commitment to an event that engages so many people in the community to love their neighbors with food. We are honored to have been the first partner of the Hunger Challenge and to still be a recipient of this incredible program!”
