The Next Door Recovery Celebrates 20 Years of Service
Local faith-based nonprofit hosts event to commemorate two decades of empowering women for lifetime recovery
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept.30, 2024)–The Next Door Recovery, a local faith-based nonprofit offering addiction treatment services for women, recently celebrated two decades of dedicated service empowering women in recovery. The gala was held at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with attendees who have played a part in this 20-year journey.
The 20th-anniversary gala was a night full of testimonials, information and music from artist Tenille Townes, who performed her moving song, “Somebody’s Daughter,” which was inspired by a girl Townes saw holding a cardboard sign in Nashville. The song shines a light on how everyone has a story to tell and needs to feel empowered to share and ask for help.
“This celebration marks 20 years of hope and transformation,” said Amanda Dunlap, clinical executive director of The Next Door Recovery. “Every day, our team walks alongside women battling addiction as they take the courageous step toward recovery. To see alumni return and share their storiesis a testament to the impact we’ve had on so many lives.
“The Next Door Recovery’s origins date back to 2002, when a group of women from First Baptist Church Nashville, known as the Wild Praying Women, prayed for guidance on repurposing a vacant building on Eighth Avenue South. The Wild Praying Women conducted a comprehensive needs assessment of the community and found that the biggest need was transitional housing and services for women coming from incarceration.
As the program continued to grow, the team expanded its treatment options, and so it became clear that a larger facility in Nashville was necessary to meet these growing needs.
In 2014, The Next Door Recovery purchased its current property and built a new facility, enabling the organization to serve up to 79 women in a residential setting and a full continuum of outpatient services. Since its inception, The Next Door Recovery has served more than 17,000 women in Nashville.
“Changing the life of one woman can impact an entire generation,” said Rachel Morris, executive director of The Next Door Recovery. “When we see one woman walk out of our doors ready for a lifetime of recovery, we see her daughter, her son and her support team.”
