Get help enrolling in TennCare and ObamaCare

Murfreesboro, TN– People living in rural counties are not taking advantage of health insurance options for which they are eligible. THCC has a plan to change that.

While 11% of the Tennessee population is uninsured, in rural counties the numbers are much higher. Rural communities of color are particularly underserved, with rates as high as 44% uninsured.

Two Community Organizers will work in select rural counties to help people enroll in health insurance. Thomas Savage will reach out to people in Clay, Overton, Putnam and Cumberland Counties. LeLann Evans will reach out to Dickson, Houston, Humphreys, Bedford and Perry Counties.

I look at Health Insurance as a Civil Right, says Savage. Experience taught me that working families are just a pay check away from economic disaster, and I know first-hand the importance of every family having access to good health care.

The Biden Administration has re-opened enrollment in ObamaCare to help families during the COVID pandemic. The new open enrollment period, Feb. 15 to May 15, gives people a new opportunity to get covered. The Department of Health and Human Services reports that over 200,000 people have already enrolled. TennCare enrollment is open year-round.

“Health insurance is more affordable than many people think, says Evans. ObamaCare premiums are on a sliding scale depending on income. Many people can find good deals and receive financial assistance to help lower their monthly health insurance costs.”

In Tennessee, the average 2021 premium was $77/month after financial help, and some people can get $0 coverage. Provisions in the American Rescue Plan, currently being debated in the U.S. Senate, would lower premiums even further. TennCare does not require premiums for eligible families.

The health insurance landscape can be confusing, but free, local help is available. You can find someone to help you navigate the enrollment process by calling 844-644-5443.Consumers should enroll by May 15 to get the comprehensive health insurance they need.
