Local musician is drumming up awareness of neurological disease with1st annual golf tournament. Nashville, TN., June 21, 2008
Trey Gray, award-winning drummer with the legendary country music duo, Brooks and Dunn, is a man on a mission. He and wife Lisa are working to create awareness of Huntington’s disease, a hereditary and incurable neurological disease that affects over 14,000 Tennesseans, including Trey. A secondary goal is to generate sufficient interest and support for the establishment of a TN Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) Chapter. Gray hopes to accomplish his goals through the first annual Trey Gray Tee off for a Cure Golf Tournament on September 29, 2008 at the Hermitage Golf Course in Nashville. The format is a 4-man scramble with a shotgun start. Registration, the driving range and lunch will be available beginning at 11 a.m. The tournament begins at 1 pm. and will conclude with dinner, silent auction, and an awards presentation scheduled for 6 p.m.
Honorary chair Kix Brooks will be assisted by radio personalities Big D and Bubba in presenting the awards. Golfers and guests will be entertained by Warner Bros. recording artist, Jimmy Stewart. Golfers will be able to bid on sports memorabilia, trips, gift certificate for fine dining and much more.
Cost to participate is $175 per person or $700 per foursome. A limited number of sponsorships are available and range in price from $100-$20,000. All gifts will be matched on a 2-for-1 basis by an anonymous HD research foundation. Proceeds will support national research into a cure or treatment for Huntington’s as well as local education and support services. Trey and Lisa’s hopes for this event are to raise $100,000 that may provide seed money for an HD Center of Excellence in TN. The golf tournament is one of many national events scheduled for 2008 to benefit the funding and advancement of research, education, and care programs of HDSA.
HD is a devastating, fatal, and hereditary neurological disease that destroys the brain. It brings tragedy and a legacy of economic, social, and emotional pain and suffering. HD symptoms include mood swings, incoordination, depression, difficulty speaking or swallowing, forgetfulness, and involuntary twitching. Huntington’s serves as a “model” for other neurodegenerative and genetic disorders like Parkinson’s, ALS and Alzheimer’s, which affect millions of Americans.
