More than 100 professional engineers and their guests from across Tennessee will gather in Franklin, Tennessee, on Thursday, August 25, through Friday, August 26, at the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs for the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee (ACEC) and the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE).

Bob Martineau, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation, will be the event’s opening speaker. John Schroer, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation, will be the keynote speaker at the Tennessee Engineering Foundation Luncheon on August 25, an event benefiting the Tennessee MATHCOUNTS competition, K-12 STEM activities, and engineering scholarships.

The meeting agenda will include a discussion of how geographical information system (GIS) technology was used to make crucial decisions during the historic April – May 2011 flooding of the Mississippi River; the discussion will be led by Tom Needham, PE, Shelby County Director of Public Works, and several University of Memphis professors. Paul Degges, PE, chief engineer of the Tennessee Department of Transportation, will also give an update on departmental issues.

The 2011-2012 officers of both organizations will be installed during the meeting; several Nashville area engineers are among the new officers. ACEC will induct Nashville engineers Steven Field, PE, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. as President-Elect; Thomas “Chuck” Saunders, PE, Fisher & Arnold, Inc., as Second Vice President; John Wimberly, PE, I.C. Thomasson Associates, Inc., as Secretary; and Steve Lane, PE, DEE, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc., as National Director. TSPE will induct John Cole, PE, Eastern Engineering, Lebanon, as President; Paul Kelly, PE, Aerospace Testing Alliance, Murfreesboro, as Treasurer; and Harry Clark, PE, F. NSPE, Decherd, as Delegate to the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Both organizations took a lead role in establishment of the Tennessee Engineering Center in Nashville.
