BBB Launches “Do Your Part, Shop Smart.” Holiday Scam Prevention Campaign in Partnership with Walmart
Better Business Bureau (BBB) is proud to announce the launch of its Do Your Part, Shop Smart. holiday campaign, created in partnership with Walmart to help consumers stay informed, vigilant, and protected during one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year. As online shopping, home deliveries, and social media promotions surge, so do scams and fraudulent activity.
“With the volume of holiday shopping increasing every year, it’s more important than ever for consumers to take extra steps to protect themselves,” said Robyn Householder, President and CEO, Better Business Bureau. “This campaign is designed to equip families with simple, practical tools that reduce risk and ensure a safer shopping experience.”
Do Your Part, Shop Smart. The initiative focuses on some of the most common holiday pitfalls consumers face: package theft (also known as “porch piracy”), social media shopping scams, and fake shipping notifications.
Key Tips to Protect Holiday Shoppers
1. Prevent Porch Piracy
Millions of packages are stolen each year, especially during December. BBB advises shoppers to track orders through carrier apps, require signatures for high-value items, and use secure pickup options such as lockers or in-store delivery.
2. Stay Safe on Social Media
With more shopping and advertising shifting to social platforms, scam activity continues to climb. BBB recommends researching sellers before making purchases, avoiding deals that appear too good to be true, and shopping only through official websites or verified apps.
3. Beware of Imposter Shippers
Fake shipping alerts are among the most common holiday scams. Fraudsters send texts or emails claiming a package is delayed or needs confirmation. These messages often include malicious links designed to steal personal information. Consumers should verify tracking details directly with the retailer or carrier instead of clicking unsolicited links.
