All Hands on Deck for Pirate Museum
On Thursday, March 12, the fifth-grade classes at Poplar Grove Middle School will conclude a month-long reading and language arts unit focused on the classic novel, Treasure Island, with a pirate exhibit in the school’s library from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
This ambitious adventure required all hands on deck as students spent time reading, discussing and writing about the Robert Louis Stevenson classic. Following every chapter, students completed a “sea log” in which they recorded their thoughts in a bound journal, researched vocabulary and answered critical questions.
Students enjoyed Treasure Island, which spins a tale about ships, pirates, a “lost” treasure map, buried treasure, and a young boy coming of age. Included in the “voyage” was the opportunity for each student to research some aspect of piracy.
Students wrote a research paper and created a “visual” representation of the research, which will be displayed at the “Rogue’s Gallery of Poplar Grove Pirates” on Thursday, March 12 in the school library.
During the museum opening, the fifth-grade buccaneers will dress the part as they share their project with the rest of the crew and visitors to the museum.
