Students Encouraged to Apply for the Nashville Symphony’s Curb Concerto Competition
Annual scholarship program open to aspiring Tennessee musicians ages 14-18
Nashville, Tenn. (November 27, 2018) – The Nashville Symphony has opened applications for its annual Curb Concerto Competition, which will take place at Schermerhorn Symphony Center on February 23-24, 2019. Part of the Symphony’s mission to promote, support and encourage young musicians statewide, the event showcases gifted high school-aged students from across Tennessee and distributes a total of $4,000 in scholarship money.
The Curb Concerto Competition is open to classically trained, instrumental music students ages 14-18 who have not yet completed high school. Students who play woodwind, brass, string, piano and percussion instruments are eligible to apply.
All applications are due by Friday, January 25, 2019, or until all audition spots have been filled. Interested students can visit the Nashville Symphony website for a full rundown of competition guidelines and eligibility requirements, and to begin the application process by filling out the online registration form.
This year’s competition will be capped at 24 contestants. After 24 qualifying applications have been received, entry to the competition will be closed and no further submissions will be accepted. For the best possibility of acceptance, students are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible.
The first round of adjudication for qualifying competition entrants will take place on Saturday, February 23, at the Schermerhorn, with each student performing for a panel of judges. Finalists will perform for a second panel the following day before the competition winners are announced.
The Grand Prize winner will receive $2,500, two season ticket packages for the Nashville Symphony’s Aegis Sciences Classical Series and will be considered for a solo performance during the Symphony’s free Side-by-Side Concert next spring. First runner-up receives $1,000 and two partial Classical Series season ticket packages, and second runner-up receives $500 and a pair of tickets to a Nashville Symphony Classical Series concert.
