On Thursday, August 16, the public is invited to mix and mingle with Youth Empowerment Through Arts & Humanities (YEAH!), the nonprofit organization that operates Southern Girls Rock Camp, Tennessee Teens Rock Camp and other music programs for youth and adults.
The event will feature a meet-and-greet and Q&A with Abigail Washburn and Wu Fei, hosted by NPR correspondent Ann Powers at 6 pm. These two accomplished artists will discuss their careers as musicians, and the ways that music and the arts can play a key role in helping young people find their voice and fulfill their potential.

About Abigail Washburn & Wu Fei
GRAMMY®-winning singer, songwriter and banjo player Abigail Washburn pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody’s ever heard before. While rooted in American old-time music, she is also armed with Chinese language ability and profound connections to culture and people on the other side of the Pacific. Over the course of a growing body of work as a solo, duo and group performer, she has created a new sound – a sound that challenges traditional notions of culture and countries.
Beijing native virtuoso Wu Fei is a classically trained composer, master of the guzheng (the 21-string Chinese zither) and a vocalist. She plays in a musical language that is at least 2,000 years old and mixes Western and Chinese traditions with a contemporary, idiosyncratic sound. She is single-handedly responsible for bringing this once-elitist court instrument out of the palaces of the Qin dynasty and into the streets, using it in entirely unexpected and captivating ways.
Together, Wu Fei and Abigail Washburn collaborate to create a musical project that weaves together traditional Appalachian and Chinese folk music. “As more and more people engage in this struggle for a new direction for the human spirit,” Washburn says, “we’ll recognize that we’re morphing into a global species.”

Youth Empowerment Through Arts & Humanities (YEAH!) supports a culture of positive self-esteem and collaboration among young people while building community through music. YEAH! provides positive arts programming including rock camps for girls, boys and non-gender-conforming youth, as well as a Ladies Rock Camp for adults and year-round afterschool programs.
These camps recognize the potential of every young person to be a strong, talented, creative and empowered individual while providing a safe space where everyone can rock.
