Day of Music
A morning performance by the Nashville Symphony, an outdoor stage on Symphony Place and nighttime salsa dancing are just some of the highlights of the Regions FREE Day of Music, taking place 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Now in its sixth year, this annual event invites the public to enjoy a full day of music at the Nashville Symphony’s home in downtown Nashville, with performances taking place on four stages throughout the building.
The day begins at 10 a.m., when brass and percussion ensemble Ram Corps will march over the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge to perform a choreographed concert on Symphony Place, jumpstarting a smorgasbord of 13 continuous hours of free musical offerings. Along with back-to-back concerts, happenings this year include an instrument petting zoo, juggling, face-painting, storytelling and other children’s activities led by Lipscomb University drama students before and after the Nashville Symphony’s concert. Led by Associate Conductor Kelly Corcoran, the Symphony will perform The Family of Music, a guided tour through the different components — musicians, composer, conductor and audience — that make up a musical experience. Ideal for children and adults, the 11 a.m. concert is the perfect way for people of all ages to enjoy attending a Symphony concert in Laura Turner Concert Hall.
Another feature of this year’s FREE Day of Music is an outdoor stage on Symphony Place, which will feature music of all genres, from rock to bluegrass to jazz. Guests can also enjoy music in the Schermerhorn’s Martha Rivers Ingram Garden Courtyard and the Mike Curb Family Music Education Hall. Other performances include a Youth Orchestra concert at 7:45 p.m. showcasing the Curb Youth Orchestra, the Music City Youth Orchestra and the Williamson County Youth Orchestra. Featuring staff of the local nonprofit organization Conexión Américas, the Latin ensemble Rumba will cap off the day with a 9 p.m. performance. The concert hall floor will be configured to allow salsa dancing, and instructors from Nashville Ballroom will be on hand to teach new dance steps to all.
