Figures Bluff, also spelled Figuers Bluff, is a historical bluff in Franklin, Tennessee, that overlooks the Harpeth River and was the site of the Union Army’s Fort Granger during the Civil War. The name “Figuers Bluff” is linked to the prominent Figuers family, who were early settlers in the area. The bluff’s strategic military location, high above the river and the crucial Tennessee and Alabama Railroad, made it the ideal spot for Union forces to build Fort Granger in 1863. The fort’s artillery could control movement in and out of Franklin. During the Battle of Franklin in 1864, the fort served as the headquarters for Union Major General John M. Schofield. The bluff is located northeast of downtown Franklin, near what is now Pinkerton Park and the Harpeth River Greenway. Today, the area is part of a park and is accessible to the public. While the fort’s wooden structures are gone, the original earthen embankments remain visible. Hiking trails lead to the top of the bluff, offering scenic views and a chance to explore the historic site.
