TDOT Planning New Bridge Over Harpeth River in Downtown Franklin

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is planning to replace the Franklin Road bridge over the Harpeth River into downtown Franklin.

The bridge, also referred to as the State Route 6 or East Main Street Bridge, is nearly 100 years old. TDOT officials said the bridge is in poor condition and was originally expected to last between 50 and 70 years.

TDOT presented the bridge replacement project to Franklin leaders during a recent Board of Mayor and Aldermen work session. According to the meeting summary, the project is funded through state transportation modernization act funds, with construction planned to begin after a June 26th bid letting.

The project is expected to include pedestrian and bike lanes, decorative lighting, and traffic management plans during construction. TDOT has said one lane of travel in each direction will remain open while work is underway.

The bridge replacement is also expected to bring hydraulic improvements to the Harpeth River. TDOT officials said the project should improve river flow and remove several upstream properties from the floodplain.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
