Franklin, TN, Named One of America’s Safest Midsize Cities in 2026 Study

Franklin, Tennessee, has been named one of the safest midsize cities in the United States, according to a new SmartAsset study.

The 2026 study ranked more than 300 midsize cities with populations between 65,000 and 250,000. Cities were evaluated using a composite score based on violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates, and natural disaster risk.

Franklin ranked No. 12 on the list of the 75 safest midsize cities. According to the study, Franklin reported 1.32 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 9.43 property crimes per 1,000 residents, 7.51 auto fatalities per 100,000 residents, and a “relatively moderate” natural disaster risk rating.

SmartAsset noted that safety and security are major factors in quality of life, especially in midsize cities where residents may be looking for a balance of opportunity, affordability, and peace of mind.

The study named Broomfield, Colorado, as the safest midsize city in the country, followed by State College, Pennsylvania; Warwick, Rhode Island; Ames, Iowa; and Logan, Utah.

The recognition follows other recent safety-related rankings for Williamson County communities. In 2025, Nolensville ranked No. 1 on SafeWise’s list of the safest cities in Tennessee, with Fairview, Spring Hill, Brentwood, and Franklin also making the statewide top 20. Franklin’s latest appearance on SmartAsset’s national midsize-city list adds to that broader picture of Williamson County communities being recognized for safety and livability.

The safety ranking also follows another recent recognition for Franklin. The city was named one of Southern Living’s Best Cities in the South for 2026, pointing to Franklin’s continued national profile as a desirable place to live, work, and visit.
