FIS becomes the third Franklin Special District school to earn national recognition for collaboration, student learning, and continuous improvement
Franklin, TN — Freedom Intermediate School has earned the designation of Model Professional Learning Community at Work® School from Solution Tree, a national recognition that honors schools demonstrating sustained success in improving student learning through collaboration, shared accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Freedom Intermediate is the third school in the Franklin Special District to receive Model PLC at Work® recognition, joining Freedom Middle School and Poplar Grove Elementary School. Only 12 schools in Tennessee hold this designation.
The PLC at Work® process is grounded in the belief that student learning improves when educators work together in focused, ongoing teams. In a professional learning community, teachers collaborate to identify what students need to learn, monitor student progress, respond when students need additional support, and extend learning when students are ready for more.
“Over the past two years, our school has worked hard to strengthen the way we collaborate through the PLC at Work process. This recognition reflects the daily commitment of our teachers and staff to focus on student learning, use data to guide instruction, and work together to ensure every student has the support and opportunity to succeed,” said Freedom Intermediate principal Dr. Joel Hoag.

Freedom Intermediate School was recognized after a review of its application and updated student learning data. In its approval letter, the Evidence of Effectiveness Committee stated that the school’s submission “clearly reflects strong systems, intentional collaboration, and sustained efforts that are positively impacting both teacher practice and student learning.”
Schools are recognized as Model PLC at Work® schools based on strict criteria, including a demonstrated commitment to PLC concepts, at least three years of implementing those concepts, and clear evidence of improved student learning over time. Once measurable results are evident, schools submit information on their practices, structures, and culture for review.
“This recognition highlights the work taking place at Freedom Intermediate to build strong teacher teams, use evidence of student learning to guide instruction, and create systems that help ensure all students receive the time and support they need to succeed,” said Dr. Mary Decker, Associate Director of Schools for Teaching and Learning. “It also reflects Franklin Special District’s broader commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement across our schools. We are proud that Freedom Intermediate is now the third FSD school to earn this distinction.”
