Legal Aid Society, Lawyers’ Association for Women Partner for Fundraising Campaign to Help Domestic Violence Survivors

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, Oct. 26, 2023 – Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Tennessee’s largest nonprofit law firm, announced today that it is partnering with the Lawyers’ Association for Women for a fundraising campaign aimed at assisting survivors of domestic violence.
The fundraising effort, lasting through the end of the year, is being launched as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which runs through October. Funds raised will go toward funding vital educational materials that will make a tangible difference in the lives of survivors.
Legal Aid Society offers free legal assistance to help domestic violence survivors break free from abusive situations, including securing protective orders, securing safe housing and keeping custody of their children. Lawyers’ Association for Women is a legal group dedicated to promoting career opportunities, improving the overall quality of the bench, furthering the selection of qualified women for election and nomination to the bench, and supporting social causes impacting women.

As we provide education and free legal representation to low-income Tennesseans, including domestic violence survivors, the additional funding from this campaign will amplify our existing efforts so that we can assist more survivors in need.”
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, held annually since 1989, is a time to acknowledge survivors and create a safer world for those who have been affected by domestic violence.
According to the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, almost half of the crimes against persons in Tennessee are domestic violence related. Although Tennessee is the 16th most populous state, it ranks seventh overall in the nation for the number of women killed by men. Additionally, in Nashville, Metro Police respond to a domestic violence call every 20 minutes.
