Joan Lunden to speak at FiftyForward breakfast on Tuesday, May 2, in celebration of older adults and Older Americans Month
Nashville, Tenn. – In celebration of older adults and in recognition of May as Older Americans Month, award-winning journalist Joan Lunden will say good morning to Nashville on Tuesday, May 2. Lunden will be the keynote speaker at a breakfast event held at Geodis Park in honor of FiftyForward’s efforts to support, champion, and enhance the lives of older adults in Middle Tennessee.
“We are thrilled to announce Joan Lunden will be helping us kick off the month of May as we celebrate and recognize the value of older adults during Older Americans Month,” said FiftyForward CEO Sallie Hussey. “Ms. Lunden is a longtime and trusted journalist having spent more than two decades ushering in our mornings on ‘Good Morning America’ and we are so excited that our mission and purpose resonated with her outreach efforts. Today, she continues as an author, motivational speaker, and champion for caregivers everywhere, and as a member of the sandwich generation, she knows the challenges we face as we age, especially related to caring for ourselves and our older loved ones. Joan Lunden embodies today’s modern working woman.”
Tickets for the breakfast event will be available on March 1. Visit www.fiftyforward.org/oam for details.
Lunden is one of America’s most recognized and trusted personalities. She is a sought-after speaker and event host throughout the country. She is the host of the PBS television series, Second Opinion with Joan Lunden, and the Washington Post podcast series, Caring for Tomorrow.
Lunden’s demographic is far-reaching. She is a mother of seven including two sets of teenage twins. Like many Boomers in America, she has juggled life as a working mom while caring for an aging parent. She has spoken candidly about the various phases of aging.
Aging was the topic of Lunden’s 2020 book, “Why Did I Come into This Room; A Candid Conversation About Aging,” and she is eager to use her expertise to put the focus on older adults as well as the benefits and challenges that present themselves with the passing of years.
“FiftyForward has always been focused on older adults since the founding of the agency more than 65 years ago,” added Hussey. “In May 2022, we marked our first official celebration of this awareness month and believe Older Americans Month underscores the work we do every day. We are excited to build on the momentum of that success by welcoming Joan Lunden to the community we know, love, and call home.”
Older Americans Month has deep roots. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking the entire nation to pay tribute to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is now celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities. Tickets for the breakfast event will go on sale on March 1.
