Volunteers Provide In-Person or Virtual Tax Prep Services
Nashville, Tenn. — United Way of Greater Nashville is recruiting volunteers to provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Each year, thousands of Middle Tennesseans rely on this vital service—not only to file their taxes but to access critical tax credits and save on costly preparation fees.
Volunteers serve as:
- Greeters
- Tax preparers
- Quality reviewers
- Site coordinators
Many volunteers begin with no prior tax experience and receive free IRS-certified training.
Join United Way’s VITA team and help hardworking families keep more of what they earn. No tax experience is required—just a willingness to learn and a heart for service.

Volunteers help qualifying individuals receive important credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC)—benefits that lift millions out of poverty each year. This year, 260 volunteers stepped up across Middle Tennessee, preparing 11,130 tax returns—a 5% increase from the previous year.
Their efforts saved taxpayers more than $3.8 million in preparation fees and returned $12.7 million in refunds to the local economy.
“The financial benefits of VITA go far beyond the number of returns filed,” said Bonnie Bowles, United Way of Greater Nashville’s VITA Associate Director. “Our dedicated volunteers play a critical role in helping return millions of dollars back into the communities we serve. Many times, I have called our tax sites reality changers.”
“Volunteering at VITA is the best part of tax season,” said long-time volunteer Gayle Rodrich. “I’ve met so many great people while making an important contribution to my community. VITA is a vital service to so many people.”
Training for new volunteers begins in December and continues through January. Volunteers can choose their preferred site location, training schedule, and role. Tax preparation services officially begin in late January.
