Model Railroad Days is coming to the Tennessee Central Railway Museum August 22-23. The free family event will showcase operating model trains and detailed railroad dioramas. Visitors can explore three operational model train layouts throughout the weekend. The event runs Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Sunday hours are 11 am to 3 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

The displays feature detailed scenes with more than 200 feet of track. Several dioramas have earned national awards for their craftsmanship and creativity. Young train enthusiasts can also take the controls with experienced hobbyists nearby. The event will include clinics covering different aspects of model railroading. These sessions can help beginners get started or improve existing layouts. Tennessee T-Trak Associates builds portable modules using standardized designs for public exhibits. The group includes model railroad enthusiasts from Tennessee and surrounding states.

The event also follows a major month for Tennessee model railroad enthusiasts. Earlier this August, Chattanooga hosted the National Train Show and a massive T-Trak display. The record-setting layout featured hundreds of individual modules and more than 93 scale miles. Modules represented 48 states, Denmark, and Australia, highlighting the hobby’s wide-reaching community.

Clinics and Seminars at Model Railroad Days

The weekend will include clinics covering several popular model railroading topics. Together, these sessions offer practical information for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. You can reserve your spot on their website.

First, the Introduction to Digital Command Control seminar explores modern train control technology. Attendees will learn about DCC systems, NMRA standards, command stations, throttles, and decoders. The session also covers Wi-Fi controls that let users operate trains remotely. An experienced modeler with more than 15 years using DCC will lead the workshop.

Next, the Introduction to Modular Railroading clinic explores flexible layouts for homes and public displays. Participants will learn how standardized modules connect to create larger model railroads. In addition, the workshop covers transportation, construction, scenery, and layout design. Experienced modular modelers will share tips for building portable and expandable layouts.

Finally, the Scenery Techniques workshop focuses on creating realistic landscapes and detailed railroad scenes. Attendees will learn how scenery adds depth, context, and character to model layouts. Along the way, the session covers practical materials available from hobby, craft, and home improvement stores. An award-winning model railroader will lead the workshop and share proven scenery techniques.

About the Tennessee Central Railway Museum

The Tennessee Central Railway Museum (TCRM) preserves and operates historic railroad equipment in Nashville. This volunteer-run nonprofit promotes railroad history through education and vintage train experiences. Its mission includes preserving, restoring, interpreting, and operating historic railroad equipment.

Since 1991, TCRM has operated passenger excursions from Nashville throughout Middle Tennessee. Destinations have included Lebanon, Watertown, Baxter, Cookeville, and Monterey. Trains typically feature air-conditioned coaches, refreshments, and souvenirs available onboard. Some excursions also offer upgraded accommodations in specialty cars for an additional cost. The collection includes locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, and freight cars. Volunteers regularly restore and maintain this historic equipment throughout the year.

The museum operates from the former Tennessee Central Railway Master Mechanic’s office. Located at 220 Willow Street, the headquarters sits near downtown Nashville. The building houses offices, a library, and an extensive railroad artifact collection. It includes the largest collection of Tennessee Central Railway artifacts found anywhere. TCRM also hosts model railroad clubs, including Nashville N-Trak and its HO Club. Model Railroad Days offers another way to experience railroad history up close.
